Goodbye 2009!

This has been a tremendous year for us here at Pelotonics. We would like to thank everyone for all of the support and good ideas for the application enhancements we have made over the year. Our Google Documents integration is released and proving invaluable to many businesses. We also upgraded our security protocols to the most stringent in the business, but still maintained a convenient and accessible application. A big thanks goes out to Gina Trapani and many of our customers for your guidance in this regard!

2009 was surely a turbulent year for almost all of our customers, but we made it through. We are looking positively toward the New Year for what it holds in the way of opportunity and expansion.

We would like to take this time to thank our current customers and wish you the best of success and prosperity in 2010.

Thanks and have a Happy New Year!

We are interested in what you think about Pelotonics online project management software!

First I would like to thank everyone for making this such a great year for Pelotonics. We have been growing like gangbusters and have really enjoyed getting to know our user base more deeply. If you didn’t already notice, we have recently upgraded the look and feel of Pelotonics under the direction of our esteemed advisor, Gina Trapani.

All I can say is, “what a great move!”. We recieved numerous positive comments from you, our users regarding the change. The re-design was focused on making things easier to access and manipulate. Aside from making it look more modern, Daniel added AJAX capabilities to the numerous filters that exist throughout the application. If you want to just see Tasks on the calendar for instance, just click the box and it happens immediately. No clicking on another button to perform that task! I hope you enjoy the new streamlined nature of the application.

Now, with that having been said, we are studying out the possibility of including an enterprise wiki into Pelotonics. This wiki could be used as a standard intranet for a company or organization as well as tie in directly to Pelotonics. Imagine being able to add wiki pages to your projects. This capability would give you the ability to store information and enhance communications with your project members. We want your feedback.

Are you using a wiki today? Do you have your eye on a wiki in the near future? The integration that we are contemplating would provide you with a simple wiki as part of the standard subscription packages with Pelotonics. We would also offer an upgraded wiki option that would provide enterprise features like LDAP connectivity and many other connectors to databases within your organization.

Pelotonics is evolving into a tremendous tool. I was just up at Warner Brothers last week and I was truly amazed at how many projects they are managing on Pelotonics! We feel that migrating to a more enterprise option is something that we would like to explore. I am interested in your take! Let us know what you think…

In June, Prem Sundaram of TSG Consulting came up with a simple (we love that!) yet very helpful feature related to our Evernote integration. As many of you know, Evernote is a great tool for taking web clippings. These web pages display rather nicely in Evernote, but the API does not give us the ability to duplicate the display correctly on the Pelotonics side.

As a result, if you take a clip of a web page in Evernote and then transfer it over to Pelotonics, we will take the text from the clipping and process it indepent of the images. The images are all attached to the element within Pelotonics that you are creating. ie. Task, message, etc.

If you clip a page that includes 50 images for instance, you will create a message within Pelotonics that includes 50 attachments! That’s not a good thing and adds to clutter and distraction within Pelotonics.

Until we can get more API functionality that will help us with this issue, we are now giving you the ability to include or not include the images from webpages. This was a recommenation that Prem made to us in June. It is now implemented and ready for you! Try it out and let us know what you think.

Thanks Prem for such a great suggestion. Simple, yet solves a big problem.

Welcome to the team Gina!

I am very pleased to announce that Gina Trapani of Lifehacker fame has joined our Advisory Board. This critical addition to our team has been discussed for a while and I am very pleased that we have now made it official. I enthusiastically welcome Gina to the Pelotonics team.

I am convinced that this will be a very exciting, fun, and beneficial collaboration of ideas and capabilities. This relationship means that Pelotonics will continue to become a richer and more usable application.

As many of you know, we are focused on three things:

1. Our Philosophy on Group Productivity and Project Management, which is summed up in my book, Infoenza.

2. Maturing our core online project management software.

3. Performing integrations with complementary best-of-breed applications like Google Documents, Google Wave, Evernote, etc. to further enhance our offering.

The addition of Gina to our Board of Advisors will help us significantly in all of these areas. Gina knows Personal Productivity and Internet applications better than anyone I have ever talked with. This deep knowledge will help us in the design of our application as well as guide our integration strategy.

As Marshall Kirkpatrick mentioned in his post about Gina joining our Board of Advisors, he was the one who mentioned that Gina and I should talk. I can’t thank him enough for the introduction and consequent opportunity to work with Gina! This is getting fun…

Check out Gina’s announcement on her new blog Smarterware.org.

Today marks two important days. April Fools (my second favorite holiday next to Halloween) and Pelotonics’ birthday! We decided that last April 1st was the start of Pelotonics as we had the whole team together, we moved into our new office, and we kick started the product road map to what we have today!

We’ve come a LONG way since April 2008. We have more or less finalized the product from a design/UI perspective. We’ve added in hundreds of features while keeping the application as simple as possible. Our customer support has taken a life of its own with PeloTV and our FAQs. Though the best part of the year has been working on the integrations with top productivity Companies such as Evernote and Google Docs.

We’re about to launch the Google Docs integration, which is going to truly be a one of a kind thing! The key to bringing Google Docs to the corporate environment is permissions and ease of use. All of that will be handled behind the scenes as you’ve already set up your permissions in Pelotonics. Also, for the past 6 weeks, we’ve been working on our mobile application which will be able to be used on all mobile devices with an internet browser. That’s planned on being launched before the 3rd quarter.

Though we wanted to take a some time and thank our users! Without you, our product wouldn’t exist. Pelotonics is a living a breathing application, and from your feedback, Pelotonics will be the best software to truly help people and organizations get their project work done!

Also, we have a gigantic announcement that is coming next week!

Thanks everyone for the love and support over the past year! Year two is going to be HUGE!!!

Wow! Look at our mobile application for Pelotonics!

This is a little sneak peek into our mobile application. Please realize that this is just a mock up and is changing as we speak. We are currently working on the icons to finalize our navigation. The icons are clearly generic right now and will be updated with our own take on what they should be.

Why a mobile app?

We are creating the mobile application because many of our users have asked for it. It makes all the sense in the world and is especially a great tie in with our Evernote integration. I use voice notes to archive ideas and tasks that need to happen for Pelotonics. With a mobile application, I will now be able to archive the thought in Evernote and then assign it out as a task or start a discussion with the group as a message right from my phone!

We also decided to do a mobile application that was browser based as opposed to a native application for the iPhone. We resisted the tempatation here for the sake of our users that are on platforms other than Apple! One of our good friends, Gina Trapani, just migrated over to the new G1 and we wanted to make sure that it would work on her phone as well!

Style choices we made

We decided that we wanted the mobile application to work with the color schemes that we allow on Pelotonics. If your site is green, then the application would appear like the one above. If you have it with a blue background, that would also be reflected in the mobile application.

When creating a mobile application, image compression and minimization is of utmost concern. We are currently working on that aspect to make sure that our site works well on slower cellular-based connections like the Edge network. This is where we are spening most of our time right now!

We are excited about this new mobile aspect to Pelotonics and hope that you are as well. The good news is that the mobile application will be free to all those that are associated with a paying plan. That includes your customers and collaborators not affiliated with your company!

Let us know what you think…

I saw this image the other day and thought about how important this concept is to us as a company. We ride a fine line between functionality and simplicity. Simplicity keeps people using our system. Functionality helps our users be more efficient and perform tasks specific to their organization’s work flow.

Unless a healthy balance is struck between these two competing forces, the software will not be used! Too much simplicity and the product will be dismissed as one that does not deliver value. Too much complexity and the same contention will be made but for reasons of non-use at the organization.

We would like to thank all of our users for the great ideas they have provided us on our forums, through PeloTV, and email. These ideas and suggestions are vital to our viability as a company and application in the market place. We will do everything we can to deliver what you need while keeping it a simple and elegant product that your team and your clients will use.

As we build out more complex functionality like our Evernote or Google Docs integrations, we will use the concept of progressive disclosure to strike a balance between complexity and simplicity. If the Evernote tie-in is not configured, there is no mention of it in the interface. The same will hold true of the Google docs integration. If you feel that the complexity is warrented, then enable it. If not, keep it simple and “stock”.

As we build out the product, we will continue to strike a balance between these two concepts and will need your input and comments to help us find the optimal path for Pelotonics.

Thanks for all the support and well wishes. 2009 is turning out to be an amazing year for Pelotonics!

Mobile is coming together for Pelotonics!

Android users! – It’s about time that your early adopting ways are rewarded. News just came out that Evernote is developing a client for the Android platform. No news out on exactly WHEN it will be out, but the good news is that it will be out. This is very encouraging for us to hear as we have a very close relationship with Evernote. Now G1 users will be able to record voice notes, take picture notes, and of course record text notes on thier phones.

Last night at the San Diego Geek Bonfire, I tried out the framework for our new mobile application (yes, I said mobile) on Gina Trapani’s G1 phone. I am pleased to announce that it worked quite well. I am sure that we will have to work out some kinks for different platforms, but it looks like it will be a winner.

That having been said, I want you to picture a scenario I have been dreaming about. With Evernote on the iPhone, Window’s Mobile and soon to be on Android, you will be able to take a note on your phone and then immediately open up Pelotonics’ mobile app and assign it out as a task or create a message! That will be a very neat capability to have. Right now, I take notes while I am out and about and then deal with them in Pelotonics when I am in front of my computer.

With this new liberating technological soup, I think I will be spending more time outside and I hope you use this as an excuse to do the same!

Viva la mobile!

Manage your meetings more elegantly

Based on user suggestions we now give you the choice of sending an email notification or not when creating a new appointment on a calendar within Pelotonics. This gives you the ability to add people to an appointment without bugging them with an associated email. This is especially good when you have a conversation with someone and schedule a meeting…but don’t necessarily want to clutter their inbox with that same information.

Please be aware that you are still able to establish a reminder for the event!

Here’s a screencast that shows the detail:
