I love it when new technologies come along that can cut time out of my day. Last week I was in Seattle for Gnomedex and I met a great company called Iterasi. My first interactions with Iterasi were just on a social level. What a great group of people I have to say! We had a great time up there talking about new technologies and sharing experiences.
I am happy to say that I now “get it” when it comes to their product. And to make it even better, I met Robert Scoble in Seattle as well and he has just written a post on his blog that helped me put two very cool technologies together in a way that saves me time and adds value to my day.
OK, so here’s the scoop: Iterasi is an online service that let’s you “notarize” web pages. In short, they let you book mark them as they exist on the web at that exact moment. They are not just screen captures, but true code-based representations of the screen. A good example would be if you want to archive the EXACT screen after you do an ecommerce transaction for reference purposes. You can’t book mark it in a traditional sense, but you can notarize it in Iterasi and have it stored for you for future reference. This is a very cool service, but to tell you the truth, I didn’t really see a big need for it in my work flow. Now enter the Scobelizer…
In Robert’s post about Ubiquity, he described a new functionality that Mozilla was launching that will allow you to do certain actions through hot keys. One such function that caught my eye was the ability to select text on a web page and then click “CTRL + Space, highlight” and it would highlight the words in yellow!
That’s where I got the idea. As I am surfing the web doing research, I can highlight key phrases and other words of interest and then Notarize those results in Iterasi. It works out great and is proving to be a great organizational tool for me. Below is an example of how Ubiquity works in a post I recently did. I used Ubiquity to highlight certain sentences in yellow to help me remember why I was interested in this page.
After highlighting the page per my interest, I then notarized it in Iterasi. Now, I have this page forever archived in my Iterasi account! If it changes or goes away from the web, I will not have any issue accessing that information again since it is stored securely with Iterasi. Very cool. If I want to share this information with friends, I can send them a link to the Iterasi viewer for them to see it. Click here to see this same page in Iterasi.
Now, here are the disclaimers. Ubiquity, as Robert mentions, is in its alpha stage and is probably not for everyone. As he terms it, it is designed for the “passionates” on the web. People that are early adopters and ready for new technologies because there is a bit of a ramp up period with it to learn. Additionally, if you are interested in Ubiquity, you HAVE to look at Active Words. They provide a similar functionality but it is wider ranging than just web-based interactions. With that having been said, these are two great tools that go well together!

Thanks for pointing this out. We have had a lot of requests for this capability. One problem: the link at ‘Click here to see this same page in Iterasi.’ can’t be seen as it points into your secure private account. To fix this, go to the page in your iterasi account and select EMBED to get a Short URL which will allow others to see this page.

No problem Pete. Thanks for educating on how to post a public page on the Iterasi system. I am still learning, but like what I see. Anything to be more productive is a win in my book.
August 28th, 2008 at 2:05 pmAs some further information in this area a new product called iCyte
http://www.icyte.com combines Iterasi and Ubiquity into the one product.
This means you have a deeper level of integration than with two separate products.
June 23rd, 2009 at 11:44 amHi Troy,
June 23rd, 2009 at 1:59 pmIsn’t it nice that someone would spam your blog with an annoucement that their product works better than your’s and mine combined? Some people have no class and others have no common sense. These clowns cover both camps!
Hope things are well with you and yours,
pete
