Knowledge workers seem to identify with the concept of Infoenza
Infoenza is the state of not having enough relevant information about your projects. It is also the state of having too much unstructured data clogging your inbox. Getting things done is very difficult when you have Infoenza.
Here are the top 5 symptoms of Infoenza:
1. Too many meetings. Meetings are a manifestation of an information deficit. Meetings can be shortened or avoided all together by managing information more effectively.
2. Chasing the tail. If you are delegating things out to your team and then chasing those items around in a seemingly endless circle jerk trying to get status, that’s Infoenza. This symptom can be irradicated through implementing proper feedback loops in your organization.
3. Client calls. In a client service organization, if the phone is quiet, everyone is happy. When the phone is ringing off the hook with disappointed clients asking for status on their projects, you have an accute case of Infoenza. This can be solved by involving your client in your project on a deeper and more meaningful manner. If done right, you can end these calls and communicate with your clients on your terms!
4. Fires. If you are putting out fires all day long and not accomplishing those things you would like to, you are fighting Infoenza. This symptom is caused by the details falling through the cracks. Once you implement a trusted system for your team, you can end these fiascos!
5. Missed deadlines. Missing deadlines is a function of poor communication. Solve this symptom by facilitating and encouraging communication from everyone on the team!
I will be talking about each one of these symptoms and their cures more in the coming days.
Let me know what you think!
